Throughout the Scriptures, I have found more and more examples of plumb lines. They are everywhere! Anytime that we read about divisions, separations, consecrations, or things set aside, we can view them as a type of plumb line. Jesus Christ is, of course, the ultimate plumb line. You have to be on one side or the other.
The studies on the Threshingfloor have really disciplined me to search through the true meaning of words in Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance. Consider the Jordan, which in Strong’s # 3383 from 3381, is defined as, a descender. 3381 a prim. root; to descend (lit. to go downwards; or conventionally to a lower region, as the shore, a boundary, the enemy, etc; or fig. to fall); cause to bring down, (cause to) come (-ing) down, fall (down), hang down, let down, light (down), put down (off), (cause to, let) run down, sink, subdue, take down.
It looks like some of the qualities of a plumb line to me. I believe that the Jordan is a geographical plumb line. It flows, from north to south, in a near straight line, from the Sea of Galilee down to the Dead Sea. Consider the following events at the Jordan:
(Gen 13:10) The first mention of Jordan is when Abram & Lot separated. Abram went to Canaan while Lot “pitched his tent toward Sodom.” [bad move]
(Gen 32:10) Jacob divided his people & herds into two bands before meeting Esau.
(Gen 50: 10-11) Joseph & his brethren come to the threshing floor of Atad.
(Num 14:29) Joshua & Caleb are the only 2 who do not bring “an evil report” of the promised land. [the others have that grade point average of 0.0]
(Num 22:1) Balak summons Balaam. [failures, with pencils in the noses]
(Num 26:3) A census is made of the people.
(Num 32:5) Reuben & Gad pick Gilead. The Jordan is used as a major boundary for Israel.
(Josh 3:17) Moses is forbidden entry into the promised land. Only after Moses’s death, does the nation of Israel, under Joshua’s leadership cross the Jordan and enter the promised land.
(Ps 114:3 & 5) With Josh 3:17; it is said that the Jordan is driven back, and that the Children of Israel cross the Jordan river on dry land, in a similar fashion to the Red Sea crossing, as mentioned in the Exodus account.
(1 Ki 17) Elijah predicts a drought, is fed by ravens, and comforts a widow and her son.
Elisha takes Elijah’s mantle.
Naaman is cleansed.
Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan. Multitudes begin to follow Him.
This is just one example of the many plumb lines in the Bible.
