The pressure to choke off political dissent, a/k/a “free speech” continues to roll unabated in America. The latest fiasco involves the efforts of Christians United For Israel (CUFI), the American pro-Israel lobby group headed by Pastor John Hagee, to prevent the posting of ads by Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign onto Seattle buses:
The ad campaign highlights the $30 billion pledge of military aid to Israel under a 2007 Memorandum of Understanding. The ads also present a stark picture of atrocities and suspension of human rights by Israel towards the Palestinians in occupied territories, and the American government’s ongoing complicity with what can only be called “apartheid” bordering on Nazi-style concentration camps.
CUFI on December 23, 2010 posted a “Rapid Response Action Alert” email to their membership, calling for emails to officials in King County, Washington, with an urgent request to “block the … inciteful ad from appearing on Seattle buses.” In the week leading up to the CUFI action alert, King county officials had received 2,000 e-mails to asking them to reject this ad. Within five hours — by 7:00 pm EST — our action alert had generated three times as many e-mails — almost 6,000 — to these same government officials.
CUFI reported today on its website the following:
“We are thrilled to report that your voices have been heard and that your efforts have paid off. At 7:00 p.m. EST today, King County Executive, Dow Constatine announced a new policy governing advertising on buses that, among other things, will block the proposed anti-Israel ad from appearing on city buses.”
And adding that:
“Now that the anti-Israel ad will not run, we no longer see the need to respond with our own ad telling the truth about Israel.”
Clearly, the leadership and rank and file of CUFI prefer suppression of free speech in the public arena rather than the exchange of solid, verifiable facts. The Zionist state prevails in its efforts to prevent a balanced exchange of ideas, and the revelation of of details to the American public about the plight of the Palestinian people. The CUFI pressure group, with a near stranglehold on the US Congress has now succeeded in choking off dissent on the regional level, stopping an exercise of free speech in the market place of ideas, and effectively using a minority pressure group to stifle politcal awareness to the general public under the rubric of “hate speech.”
The Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign has announced, concurrent with the ads:
“A vigil and protest in downtown Seattle on Monday, December 27, starting at 5:00 pm at 4th & Pine St. The walking vigil will be in memory of those killed in Israel’s assault on Gaza and in protest of Israel’s ongoing crimes against human rights. December 27, 2008 was the first day of Israel’s three-week military offensive against the captive population of Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 Palestinians, most of them non-combatants, more than 300 of them children.”
The spirit of America has traditionally been one of assured rights to unpopular opinion and the freedom to disseminate objective information in the political forum. Now, in the landscape of a culture ruled by political bias and well-financed lobby groups, Americans face suppression by the few of the many. Each year since 2007 CUFI has met in Washington, D.C. and exercised its own free speech rights to lobby Capitol Hill en masse in the interests of the already dominant Israeli Lobby.
The American people and their tax dollars are the “grease” for Israel’s war machine. Are we not entitled to know of the practices we subsidize; of the racist agenda of Israel, and the slow, quiet apartheid and genocide of the people in Gaza? Just as American banking interests financed Hitler during the build up of the Nazi Party in the 1930s, today it seems we now publicly finance another holocaust—one perpetrated by the very people who were, in fact, one of Hitler’s targets.
And it is the American Evangelical Christian Right which, from one corner of its mouth invokes the holocaust; and from the other, continues the same spirit of suppression and political justification of genocidal policies that were the enabling of the Nazis. Without free speech, unimpeded by special interest groups like CUFI, America falls into the same ghastly trap that befell the German people in World War II!
